How to Cleanse and Charge Your Crystals (Without Overthinking It)

Stones Absorb

Most crystal traditions agree on one practical thing: stones absorb. They take in the temperature, the mood, the long busy day at the desk, the difficult conversation at the kitchen table. This is not a flaw. It is what they're for. But like anything that takes in a lot, they appreciate a reset.

Cleansing is not a ritual obligation. It is a small piece of care, like airing a coat or rinsing a glass. You don't have to do it every day. You do it when the stone feels heavy, or when the intention has shifted, or on the full moon if you like the rhythm of that.

Three Methods We Use

1. Moonlight

The simplest and the oldest. Place the stone on a windowsill or outside overnight during a full moon (a new moon will do, less emphatically). The next morning, bring it in. The stone does not need to be explained to; it just needs the time.

2. Smoke

Pass the stone through the smoke of sage, palo santo, cedar, or incense. A few seconds is enough. The smoke is not the point ?the brief ceremony is. It marks the transition from one intention to the next.

3. Selenite & a Charging Bowl

This is the effortless one. Selenite is one of the few stones believed to cleanse without needing to be cleansed itself. Place a Selenite slab on the bedside table or altar, set your stones on it, and put a charging bowl over them. Leave overnight. The combination resets most stones, gently, with nothing to remember in the morning.

A Word on Water

Some stones love a quick rinse under the tap. Others do not.

  • Yes to a quick rinse: clear quartz, amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, tiger's eye, jasper.
  • No to water: selenite (it dissolves ?seriously, this is a chemistry fact, not mysticism), malachite, lapis, turquoise, anything soft or porous.
  • Salt water: many traditions recommend it, but it is hard on softer stones and on metal settings. Use it carefully or skip it.

If you're unsure about a particular stone, the rule is simple: don't submerge anything you'd be upset to lose.

Charging Is Different

Cleansing clears what was there. Charging sets what comes next. To charge a stone, hold it, take a breath, and say (out loud or silently) what you want it to do. Be specific. Not more money ?I am open to a steady new client by month's end. Then put the stone somewhere you'll see it daily. The stone doesn't do the work. The daily reminder does.
